Captured With Light Photography About Me

Meet Rachel, her photography, her story

Photography has always been in my blood. For as long as I can remember, every birthday, school play, day out and special occasion was captured by my father, eagerly following me and my sister around with his ageing 35mm film camera and asking us to "Say cheese!"

Years spent researching family history and unearthing ancient sepia toned photographs of relatives taken at the start of photography's invention itself cemented my love of the idea of capturing memories of family, that last lifetimes and are treasured like time machines into our past.

This passion led me to study a Foundation in Art and Design at the world famous Central Saint Martins in London where I developed my creative skills before going on to obtain a degree in Fashion Photography at the prestigious London College of Fashion.

I went on to work with fashion photographers working across the industry before going into advertising and marketing, always using my visual talents as a photographer in every role.

I am proud to have exhibited several times across London, most notably showing my work at the V&A Museum as part of the legendary Guy Bourdin retrospective. - Rachel

FAQ

Where are you based?

I live in a beautiful rural village called Matfield in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in the Parish of Matfield and Brenchley, on an old farm that hasn't been touched since the 1960's that we plan on renovating to bring back to its former glory.

Our home is just a stones throw from central Royal Tunbridge Wells, making me ideally placed to cover all of Kent and the surrounding areas including London, East and West Sussex, Surrey and Essex.

As much of my work is 'on location', I come to you, either directly to your home, or stables or business premises, or we meet at beautiful locations around the area where we can capture the best images depending on your brief.

Why should I choose you over other photographers?

Unlike many photograhers offering similar services, I have trained both academically and professionally in Photography.

After an Art & Design Foundation at Central Saint Martins in central London, I graduated from the Fashion Photography degree course at the world famous London College of Fashion where I had years of training in photography, and other areas including studio lighting, digital retouching, the science, art and history behind photography, videography, B&W and colour printing, as well as exhibiting my work all over London, most notably at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

From there I worked with photographers across industries in Marketing and Advertising in London and the Middle East organising high profile events including with British Royalty with photography alongside providing corporate branding and imagery before moving out of London to the beautiful Kent countryside to launch a specialist portrait business here in Tunbridge Wells, specialising in children, families, equine, canine, head shots and commercial photography.

Can I extend the session on the day of?

If you have already booked a session and would like to extend the time by upgrading your package then please contact me as soon as possible so we can see if we can schedule in the additional time so that you are not left disappointed.

I allow a small amount of extra time into some sessions; for example for new mums who need to feed and settle their babies, however it is unfortunately not always possible to extend the shoot on the day.

If you would like to extend the photo shoot on the day of the shoot and I am free and able to do so, there will be an additional fee payable on the day to upgrade your package.

For example, if you have arranged a family photo session of your children and booked a Mini Family Session (Package 3) for a 30 minute shoot, you can upgrade to a Full Family Session (Package 1 or 2) which is one hour.

What kind of gear do you use?

I use a DSLR Canon 6D Mark II body and favour my Sigma 85 mm F1.4 DG HSM Art prime lens for portraits along with my Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Art zoom lens for events, weddings and commercial work.

I am a huge fan of my Profoto A1X studio flash which is the best on-camera flash in the world. Am also a longstanding fan of Manfrotto kit for tripods, light stands and general studio equipment.

At home I play around with a small Leica and when I'm feeling nostalgic I use my Bronica ETRSi Medium Format film camera.

Do I have to order prints through you?

No, not at all. I realise that in this day and age people want to be able to use digital files to create their own artwork such as Christmas cards, wall art or prints for family.

However I can provide premium products for you depending on your needs and budget.

I base my packages on providing a certain number of high resolution digital files. Further high resolution files and printed products can be purchased at additional cost.

Do you charge a travel fee?

There is no travel charge for locations within a 10 mile radius, but please note that any locations further than 10 miles from my address incur a travel fee of 45p per mile.

Please contact me if you wish me to work out a quote based on your location.

"Rachel Hayes joined our family on the SPA railway for a stream train ride. Our boys are train bonkers so it was a great setting for a tailor made photo shoot. Rachel is professional, friendly and had a natural rapport with the kids. She captured some beautiful moments and their personalities perfectly. We absolutely love the images Rachel has taken and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a family photo session. We will be back for more photos with Rachel for sure!"
